What is mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is a treatment that involves injecting small amounts of various substances (vitamins, homeopathic remedies, medicines) into the skin or under the skin using a needle. Mesotherapy was pioneered by the French physician Michael Pistor, who introduced the procedure in 1958. It has been used in the fields of rheumatology, sports, traumatology, vascular diseases, and pain relief. In general, mesotherapy can be applied to the whole body. Recently, in Europe and the United States, mesotherapy for facial wrinkles and mesotherapy for hair have become very popular. These aesthetic dermatology treatments are designed to rejuvenate the facial skin, treat cellulite, lighten dark circles, and reduce eye and lip wrinkles. Mesotherapy for hair loss is considered one of the most effective treatments for hair loss.
Thus, mesotherapy can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions. The main and most popular skin problems that mesotherapy is used to treat and correct are:
- Facial skin renewal;
- Anti-wrinkles;
- Cellulite;
- Hair loss or baldness (alopecia);
- Reduction of fatty deposits (lipomas, xanthelasmas);
- Skin hyperpigmentation, melasma (skin discolouration);
- Body contouring.
Mesotherapy treatment
The procedure involves the injection of small amounts of a product into the skin using a fine needle. Mesotherapy is a simple, painless procedure. The treatment regimen is chosen according to the condition or disease being treated, the product used, the patient’s condition and other factors. In most cases, a cycle of several treatments is required to achieve the desired effect. Typically, treatments are carried out once, twice or four times a week and repeated 4-12 times. The cycle of treatments can be repeated every 6-12 months. Mesotherapy involves the use of various products and mixtures of products. Their composition varies depending on the condition to be treated and the experience of the doctor. The most common are mixtures of various medications, vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and botanicals, as well as preparations with hyaluronic acid.
If the patient is very sensitive to needle pricks, needle-free mesotherapy can be used, but this method is much less effective than needle mesotherapy (fractional mesotherapy).
The cost of the procedure depends on the product chosen and the quantity of the product.
Who can perform the mesotherapy procedure?
Mesotherapy can only be performed by a licensed specialist in a licensed health care facility. At the Laser Dermatology Centre, mesotherapy for the face and mesotherapy for the hair in Vilnius and Klaipėda are performed by professional licensed doctors.
There are conditions and diseases where mesotherapy treatment is not recommended:
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding;
- If the patient is diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type 1);
- The patient is taking blood thinners (warfarin, aspirin, heparin or others);
- There is an increased risk of blood clotting and thromboembolism;
- A history of oncological diseases or myocardial infarction, stroke;
- Allergy to the substance used or to a component of the preparation.
Like any procedure, mesotherapy can have side effects. Whether these occur depends on the patient’s condition, the product used and the technique used. The most common adverse reactions are swelling (oedema), redness (erythema), bruising (ecchymoses), subcutaneous nodules, skin discolouration (post-inflammatory hypo- or hyperpigmentation). Infection or allergic skin reaction is rare.
